The bodies of organisms can be split up by systems that all perform their necessary function.
In plants, digestion takes place through lysosomes in a process called phagocytosis. The lysosome digests the food into simple bio-molecules that they can recycle back into the system, or excrete.

In animals, the breaking down of food is compartmentalized. One digestive pouch called the gastrovascular cavity not only breaks down the food, but distributes the nutrients throughout the body. Most animals also contain an alimentary canal, which is a digestive tube extending between two openings of the body: the mouth and anus.
